Hope everyone had a great holiday! As the year is winding down, so is the organized cheap weekend events and festivals in the city. Although there are not as many organized special events, there are still so many fun and cheap things to do this weekend in Boston and beyond. I decided to make this post a little less formal than other weekend happening posts in honor of less formal event ideas listed.

When I was younger, my family took this week to venture into the city from the ‘burbs. We were able to see the Christmas lights, holiday displays and the prepartions and ice sculptures for First Night. We had a lot of fun, and it was a great post-holiday treat. We wandered around Boson Common and took in the Holiday air and sights each year.

Here are a few suggestions of holiday events that are concluding soon, and other fun events and ideas to do this weekend and for New Year’s as well.

Check out Blink, a light and sound extravaganza, which runs nightly starting at 4:30pm through NYE at Faneuil Hall Marketplace.

Enjoy SparkleFest in Harvard Square, which is wrapping up on New Year’s Eve.

See those ZooLights at Stone Zoo in Stoneham now until December 31, 2012 for $7, and only $4 for members on Monday.

New Year’s Eve on Monday is First Night Boston with lots of fun events all day long topped off with Fireworks at the end of the night. Buttons are $18 per person, but J.P. Licks are giving away free first night buttons if you like them on Facebook before 4pm on Friday, December 28, 2012. You need to check back on their FB page later to see if you won.

Go Ice Skating in Boston. There is currently a Groupon for Ice Skating at Frog Pond, which isn’t a bad deal for a couple (or family) that needs ice skates on top of admission. However, if you own skates, adult admission is only $5, and if you are a college student, you can skate for $2 at Frog Pond on Tuesday nights with your college ID.

Head west to Sturbridge, Massachusetts where kids 17 and under can grab Free Admission to Old Sturbridge Village during December vacation week and all of January too, with at least one adult paid ticket.

On Goldstar, there are free tickets to the 10th Annual Global Gala New Year’s Eve Bash for Monday night, just pay $9 in service fees per ticket.

And on New Year’s Day, if you want go outside; take a hike at Blue Hills in Milton at 1pm for some exercise and some free soup.

If you have any other cheap fun suggestions that I may have missed, feel free to leave them in the comments! Happy Friday and Happy Weekend!
