With COVID numbers climbing again in the Boston area, many residents wonder what the status of their favorite area holiday traditions is. One of these famous traditions includes the Boston Pops orchestra. The Pops sadly can’t perform in front of a live audience. However, the group is doing something special for the people as this year fans can stream the Boston Pops from the comfort of their own home. Streaming takes place from now until January 9th. The orchestra, headed by Boston legend Keith Lockhart, typically tours Boston’s finest venues during the holiday season. But with social distancing guidelines in place, they’ve had to get creative. Despite the obstacles, canceling the concerts was never a consideration.
Instead, Bostonians have the ability to stream the Boston Pops on the BSO website. But this didn’t happen overnight. At one point, the BSO didn’t know how to gather together during these socially-distant times. However, a local staple came to their aid – The Boston Red Sox.
Fenway Park provided the orchestra the perfect outdoor facility to put on a show. So on two beautiful days in October, the Pops filmed a performance at the iconic venue for their holiday streaming series. As restrictions softened for a bit, the BSO was also able to sneak in a taped performance at Symphony Hall in November. These two presentations are available to stream now.
The streams will mix footage of this year’s performances with those of years past to create a cinematic experience for viewers. Numbers include holiday classics, “O Holy Night” and “Mary’s Little Boy Child.” In addition, this year’s group of vocalists will feature eight Boston-area talents giving an authentic hometown feel to the series.
Leave it to the Pops to keep spirits high this holiday season.
