Play ball? While the Boston Red Sox reopened their spring training complex in Fort Meyers last week, Fenway South, minimal players are working out at the facility. With the whole 2020 MLB season in question, a majority of players are still taking social distancing and the stay-at-home orders seriously.
During a conference call last week, Red Sox outfielder Alex Verdugo said that “there’s nobody out here.”
“I took the whole quarantine thing pretty serious. I stayed isolated. I stayed at the house (while Fenway South was closed),” Verdugo said. “Chris Sale is coming to the complex right now, rehabbing as well. But really I’m not seeing anybody like that. We’re still taking our social distancing pretty seriously.”
When might there be a baseball season? Well, the answer is vague.
The latest proposal on the table is for a roughly 80-game season that would start in July. The league is expected to come up with a formal plan for its 2020 season this week, so time will tell if and when the Red Sox will play ball this year.
