The City of Boston, along with support from rideshare company, Lyft, is offering hospital staff members free access to Bluebikes for a month as they work hard to deal with the coronavirus pandemic.

“Our goal is to provide reliable transportation for all essential workers. We continue to monitor how our bikes are moving throughout the system,” Boston Mayor Marty Walsh said.

This program makes 3,500 Bluebikes available to medical staff members of over 12 medical centers at over 300 bike stations. Covered stations are located in Somerville, Everett, Brookline, and Cambridge as well.

For those wary of the idea of sharing bikes out of concern for catching COVID-19, Mayor Walsh said, “Bikes are disinfected regularly, including high-touch areas such as handlebars and seatposts.”

The city is also ensuring that vans used to transport the bikes are disinfected at the beginning of each shift. They’re also encouraging sick employees to stay home.
