In his "kind, warm, beautifully observed and deeply moving new play" ("Chicago Tribune"), Pulitzer Prize finalist Stephen Karam ("Sons of the Prophet") takes a fresh look at the hilarity, heart and horrors of modern American family life. Deciding to shake the holiday up a bit, Erik Blake brings his family from Pennsylvania to New York City to celebrate Thanksgiving at his youngest daughter's run-down apartment. But as darkness falls outside the crumbling pre-war duplex, mysterious things start to go bump in the night -- and family tensions reach a boiling point. After a successful Broadway run, where it won the 2016 Tony Award for Best Play, "The Humans" now comes to the Boch Center Shubert Theatre in Boston. [less-]

In 1844, Harvard's Hasty Pudding Society began producing original, elaborate annual shows written by and starring its members -- and while a lot has changed at Harvard since then, that yearly tradition has not. This year marks the society's 170th production: "Intermission Impossible", a ridiculous World War II-era theater comedy that sees alcoholic playwright Tennessee Whiskey trying to prepare for his Broadway debut while contending with an absurd group of characters with even more absurd names, like aging actress Faye Dinaway, pageant queen Amber Wavesofgrain and hunky sailor Sal Pacific. Men play all the roles in this bawdy, old-school burlesque at Farkas Hall in Cambridge -- but women are involved in all other aspects of the production, from writing to music to producing the show. Being a part of Harvard history has never been this fun -- or funny! [less-]

April 4, 1968 was a momentous day for Marcus Thompson. That was the day the young violist made his debut in a recital at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston. It also turned out to be the day Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated. Thompson learned of King's death not long before walking onstage. Needless to say, the news "was a very heavy burden to carry." But it also marked the start of an illustrious career for the Juilliard-educated musician, who then, as now, was one of only a handful of African-Americans to find success in classical music. It was with these twin legacies in mind -- King's and his own -- that Thompson, now an Institute professor at MIT, designed the program for his upcoming recital at Kresge Auditorium on Feb. 24. The concert, which is part of MIT's Sounding Series, presented by the MIT Center for Art, Science & Technology and Music and Theater Arts, coincides with the 50th anniversary of King's death, as well as the founding of the MIT Black Students' Union. The program begins with Vivaldi's "Concerto for Viola D'Amore and Strings." Next up is "Rothko Chapel," an exquisite work by the 20th century composer Morton Feldman. The program also boasts the Boston premiere of Elena Ruehr's "Shadow Light," a concerto for solo viola and string quartet. The evening's final installment, Ralph Vaughan Williams' "Flos Campi," features the MIT Chamber Chorus under the direction of MIT's Director of Choral Programs, Dr. William Cutter. [less-]

Fans of "Drunk History" and all its slurred education will fall over laughing at "Sh*t-Faced Shakespeare", which combines an entirely serious Shakespeare play with one completely inebriated cast member. For the last six years, "Sh*t-Faced Shakespeare" has been performed in the darkest corners and diviest bars in the U.K., and the cast is bringing the good time to Austin. Side-splitting, raucous and completely interactive, the show is fresh off sell-out runs at the Edinburgh and Brighton Fringe festivals, where a cast member drinks beer, wine and whiskey on stage, drunkenly sings the "Dawson's Creek" theme song and occasionally (accidentally, of course) bares a nipple or two. Brush up on your Bard knowledge, and head down to The Rockwell near Boston for "The Taming of the Shrew", because this is Shakespeare as you never knew you wanted to see him before. [less-]

The disco-fueled interactive dance party known as "The Donkey Show", very loosely inspired by Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream", puts you smack in the middle of the action in a funky Cambridge lounge setting. Featuring two full bars and a dance floor, OBERON's Diane Paulus-created wonderland was inspired by Studio 54 in its heyday, when celebrities and art icons would mix and mingle with kids from Queens, and the "Saturday Night Fever" soundtrack would be shaking the speakers. While you -- and the rest of the audience -- drink, dance to disco classics or just check out the action, the motley crew of characters in this glammed-up, sex-fueled version of Shakespeare's play re-enact the hilariously chaotic tale of a magic elixir that wreaks havoc at the nightclub. But it's mostly just a cool boogie-filled bash. [less-]
